Beginner In-Ground Pool Maintenance Tips

There are a couple of basic concepts that will help you immensely in keeping your in-ground pool clean and well maintained. The first one is that it’s a lot easier to prevent the pool getting very dirty and clean a lightly soiled pool than it is to clean a very dirty pool. Similarly, it is easier to make small changes in pool chemistry than to make big changes, so regularly monitoring will save you work in the long run.

Use your cover. By that we mean keep the pool covered all the time when you are not using it. Keeping the pool covered has many advantages. It not only keeps the pool clean and is an added safety feature, but the cover preserves heat, prevents heat loss, prevents evaporation, and helps to maintain a steady chemistry.

One easy way to keep the pool clean is to keep trees and shrubs pruned way back from the pool. If necessary, relocate shrubbery altogether. Anything near the pool that drops its leaves will contribute to putting leaves in the pool. And make sure the pool is covered while you are pruning trees or cutting grass.

Watch the Chemistry

Check the pool weekly that the chemistry meets your prescribed parameters. If anything needs attending to, do it at once. Don’t wait until the day before a big pool party to start adjusting the chemistry. Similarly, don’t wait until your pool is green or black before checking the chemistry.

The best way to stay on top of pool maintenance is to use preventative maintenance, keep the pool covered when not in use, and check the pool a lot for its chemistry. In pool maintenance, an ounce of prevention is worth a kiloton of cure.
