What's Involved With Winterizing My West-Coast Pool

With winter coming, we must admit that the final swim of the year is on the horizon—if it hasn’t happened already. Winterizing your pool is a crucial step to avoid damage. Failure to properly winterize can damage liners, pumps, filters, heaters, pipes, and even the foundation itself—and nobody wants to be faced with the hassle and cost of repairs come springtime.

Here are some general guidelines on what is involved in the process of winterizing your west-coast pool:

You’ll first need to decide what type of winterizing best fits your needs:

Partial Shut-down

Because of our mild climate, we have the option of leaving water in the pool over the winter. This involves typical pool care instructions such as cleaning and chemical balancing, along with some additional care instructions. Rain throughout the winter can throw-off chemical levels, so it is important to be vigilant to avoid low pH levels which can damage pool parts. It is a good idea to add a stain preventer agent as well. The pump should stay on, and based on your needs, the heater may need to be turned on occasionally as well.

Drain and Dry

If you decide on this route, you have two options for dealing with the water that remains after drainage. Whichever route you take, the goal is to avoid freezing water being trapped where it shouldn’t be. One option involves using a vacuum or air compressor to remove every last drop of water from the pool system, and the alternative is to use pool antifreeze. A pool winterized in this fashion should be cleaned, along with all its equipment as well.
