What You Can Do to Make Your Vinyl Pool Liner Last Longer

Everyone with a vinyl pool knows that the vinyl liners have to be replaced on a regular basis, perhaps every 7-10 years. But sometimes the question gets asked, can you do things to make your vinyl liner last longer? Yes, there are some things you can do to make it last longer, but it will still have to be replaced from time to time.

Here is what you need to know:

Installation

Correct installation of the liner is important. If the liner is not installed correctly it will wear faster, no matter how great the quality of the liner is. Make sure you select an experienced pool builder to both build your vinyl pool initially and install or reinstall the liner.

Liner Quality

The liner quality does make a difference, assuming the liner is installed correctly. Thicker liners last longer because it takes longer for them to degrade, and they are harder to puncture. So, it’s a question or spending more money up front or spending less but replacing the liner more frequently.

Sun

Ultraviolet light degrades vinyl. So, keep your pool covered when it is not in use. That sunshine is beautiful and feels good but you don’t want it on your liner if you are not in the pool.

Chemistry

Big swings in pool chemistry are hard on the liner. Master the principles of pool chemistry early on, so you don’t have to subject your liner to big swings in chemistry. Keeping your chemistry under good control will help your liner to last longer.

Animals

Try to keep animals like dogs out of the pool because they can easily puncture the liner. If this is an issue, then upgrade your pool fencing to keep them out, and most importantly, keep the pool covered when it is not in use. You don’t want anyone or anything in the pool when you are not there to supervise. An appropriate perfectly fitting cover is your best friend. And if you don’t enjoy covering and uncovering the pool, then get something automatic that makes it easy.

No matter what you do, vinyl will not last forever. The liner is outside where the sun shines on it, chemicals bathe against it, and the temperature is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Vinyl is tough, but eventually it will need to be replaced. However, if you take a few precautions you can make your liner last longer than your neighbour’s liner if he doesn’t take any precautions.
